Root and Trunk Damage

Anyone who has mowed their lawn has experienced a little accident when trying to work around their trees.  The mower may make a little cut or the weed-eater strips a little bark off their tree.

The best way to avoid excessive trunk damage to roots and trees is to create mulch rings around them.  These rings can be as small as a couple feet in diameter and as large as the drip line of the tree canopy.  The drip line is where the tree growth stops on the branches.

Once you get damage this isn’t much you can do other than keep your tree HEALTHY!  The healthier the tree, the faster it can seal over the wounds.  Too much damage or girdling of the trunk will lead to necrosis (death) and should be avoided.  Girdling is damage that occurs all the way around the tree and stops the flow of nutrients in the tree.  Deep root fertilizing your trees helps add nutrients to the ground so the tree has plenty of nutrition.
