A tree inventory is an essential part of every campus, commercial property or even home. It leaves a history of what type of trees exist, when they were planted and how many are on the property. It can be a daunting task to put one together from scratch, especially if you don’t know much about trees. But everyone can start one easily. Get a map and just put the location of the tree. Number the tree and put that number next to the location you have on the map. Next put the size of the tree by measuring the DBH (Diameter at breast height). You can start to put information next to the tree such as planted in 2017, or trimmed 2019. You may know some basic information like, this is an oak or that is a maple. Start with the easy things and let it evolve over time. As you install new trees, put in all the information from the tag before the names are lost forever. You can start by using excel and paint if that is all you have. Starting is the hardest part, but once you have, you won’t regret it.
